Electrical Engineering student saw a banner outside his hostel and decided to register to take part in the Mazingira Challenge, innovation category.
Daniel Nakolah, a first year student undertaking Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering designed an app to minimize printing of receipts by companies. After completion of a payment transaction, the app sends a text message as the receipt, to the customer. This he says will help “to reduce the carbon foot print and help customers monitor their expenses”.
The first implementation of the app is through the text message, but a customer can manage a backup of receipts received online, through a web application.
Daniel who is skilled and self-taught in Python programming language works on the web application of Rafiki Receipts, while his friend, Nathan Ng’ethe also in first year, studying Bachelor of Science in Economics, works on the android application.
Daniel and Nathan intend to pilot the first version of Rafiki Receipts by mid-March 2020 in a local retail store that they are yet to identify.
Mazingira Challenge was held in Chiromo Campus February 2, 2020. The challenge was organized by Chiromo Environmental Awareness Club (CEAC). The winner of Mazingira quiz challenge, Kiboko Team, will represent the University of Nairobi in the national Mazingira Challenge competition.
Kiboko team who emerged winners of Mazingira Challenge 2020, comprised a team of three second year students undertaking Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
