Degraded Ecosystem

The observed severe degradation results from a conjunction of heavy rainfall, steep slopes, erosion-prone loose volcanic soils as well as general poverty in the area. The densely populated highlands of Nyanza Province have some of the poorest populations in Kenya. The primary livelihood strategy for about 85-90% percent of the population in the two river basins is farming. HIV/AIDS rates are among the highest in the country.
