DROUGHT ASSESSMENT IN RWANDA

Like in many East African countries, Rwanda experiences two seasons of rainfall (MAM and SOND) and two dry seasons between the wet seasons. Of interest in this work were the occurrence, variability, coverage and effect of meteorological drought in Rwanda. The main objective of this study was to determine spatial and temporal characteristics of drought in Rwanda. Data used in this study project was monthly rainfall data running from 1971 to 2012 for five representative stations in Rwanda.

TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF RAINFALL OVER THE RIFT VALLEY REGION OF KENYA

Rainfall is one of the most important weather elements for regions dependent on agriculture The Rift valley province holds significant agricultural and hydrologic importance. It exhibits two major rainy seasons, the March, April and May long rains and the October, November and December short rains, both related to the passage of the ITCZ, but differing in the amount of rainfall recorded and its inter—annual variability (Machana, 2004).

EFFECTS OF CLIMATE VARIABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE ON SORGHUM PRODUCTION IN SEMI ARID MACHAKOS COUNTY IN KENYA

Climate change is going to cause changes in the weather patterns over Kenya, which may include the extreme episodes of rainfall and temperatures. The weather changes will have serious impacts on food security in various parts of the country. Over the last two decades, there have been repeated maize crop failures in many parts of eastern Kenya because of droughts. READ MORE

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEASONAL RAINFALL IN NAMIBIA AND THE SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES SSTs OVER THE ATLANTIC AND THE INDIAN OCEANS

This study is an attempt to understand the dynamics of the response of precipitation over
Namibia compared to anomalies in the sea surface temperature (SST) over the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. READ MORE

EMPIRICAL STATISTICAL MODELS FOR PREDICTING SEASONAL RAINFALL OVER MALAWI USING SSTs AND SOI

The main aim of this study was to develop a statistical model for forecasting seasonal rainfall in Malawi using known oceanic predictors. The prediction of the seasonal rainfall was to be done for the representative stations after the country had been delineated into homogeneous climatological zones. READ MORE

A CASE STUDY OF THE IMPACTS OF HEAVY RAINFALL ON ACCIDENTS IN NAIROBI COUNTY

INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RAINFALL VARIABILITY AND FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF NYANDO BASIN

One of the ways of developing policies and development of actions for flood control and watershed management is through a better understanding of the discharge of a river in relation to rainfall patterns and how these two are varying with time. A study conducted in Nyando River basin has tried to exert a better assessment of rainfall variability to help in flood management planning process. READ MORE
